From 1530 to 1780, Arab pirates caught at least a million Europeans around the Mediterranean and as far away as England and Iceland. Slaves were so plentiful, masters just worked them to death and bought more. White galley slaves, chained to their oars, might never leave the ship and were tossed overboard at the first sign of weakness.
