The US has issued a new travel advisory for India, maintaining guidance for solo female travellers and significantly escalating the severity of its warnings in light of ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, recent terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and issues at the borders with Pakistan and Nepal.

The update, issued by the State Department, includes a greater emphasis on the risks of violent crime, sexual violence, regional unrest, and immigration issues at land borders, particularly for solo women travellers and those entering India from neighbouring countries like Nepal.

The State Department considers India as a whole a “Level 2” country for travellers, where 1 is the riskiest and 4 means Americans are urged “do not travel”. While its categorisation of India has not changed, the language of the updated 2025 advisory includes sharper warnings in several key areas.

Among the most prominent changes are new warnings about immigration enforcement and land border crossings. It specifically advises US travellers not to enter India via the India-Nepal border.

“US citizens are advised not to cross the India-Nepal border by land due to the risk for immigration-related detention and fines,” the advisory states.

The Indian government does not accept electronic visas at land border checkpoints, and even those carrying physical visas have reportedly encountered legal issues, it added.

Regional travel restrictions have also been tightened. The advisory now has an expanded section with a clear “do not travel” directive for the state of Manipur, citing ongoing ethnic violence and instability.

“Ongoing ethnic-based conflict has resulted in reports of extensive violence and community displacement. Attacks against Indian government targets occur on a regular basis,” the advisory said, adding that US government employees working in India need prior approval before they visit the state.

The warning stems from the two years of sustained ethnic violence between the Meitei majority and Kuki-Zo tribal communities that began in May 2023. Clashes have killed over 250 people, displaced more than 60,000, destroyed thousands of homes and religious structures, and there continue to be shootings and deadly crossfire incidents involving civilians and security forces.

Similarly, the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura, which were previously grouped under a level 3 “reconsider travel” guidance, now also have a more detailed section on the risks associated.

Warnings about the Jammu and Kashmir region remain in effect, excluding Leh and eastern Ladakh. The advisory reiterates that foreigners are prohibited by Indian law from visiting areas near the Line of Control – the de facto border between India and Pakistan in the contested Himalayan region – and that terrorism and civil unrest continue to pose threats in Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. These cautions have been in place for several years and remain unchanged in the June 2025 update.

The advisory does, however, reflect the aftermath of the 22 April terrorist attack in Pahalgam, where gunmen opened fire on tourists in the Baisaran Valley, killing 26. It was the deadliest attack on tourists in the region in over three decades.

Other recurring elements of the advisory have been retained, including warnings about restrictions on carrying satellite phones or GPS devices into India. These are still prohibited by Indian law and violators may face severe penalties, including large fines of up to $200,000 (about £150,000) and jail time.

The advisory also continued to highlight the risks of travelling to regions affected by Maoist insurgency in eastern Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Travel to these areas by US government personnel remains subject to special approval.

The advisory retained language stating that “rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in India” and warned that women are particularly vulnerable, especially at tourist destinations. It urged US citizens, “especially women,” not to travel alone.

It also identified certain public venues where the risk of violent crime or terrorist attacks is perceived to be high. The updated language named tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets or shopping malls, and government facilities as sites where a terrorist attack could take place without warning.

Over 1,500 Iranian nationals who illegally entered the U.S. at the southern border were arrested during the Biden administration, and nearly 50% of them were released back into the country, according to a senior U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) source.

More specifically, Border Patrol agents arrested 1,504 Iranian nationals from fiscal year 2021 through fiscal year 2024. Of the 1,504 individuals who were arrested, 729 were released into the U.S.

The number of Iranian nationals arrested at the southern border increased year-to-year, with 48 being arrested in FY21; 197 in FY22; 462 in FY23 and 797 in FY24.

Likewise, the number of Iranian nationals released also increased, with 12 in FY21; 40 in FY22; 229 in FY23; and 448 in FY24.

It is unclear how many of the Iranians released into the U.S. were on the terrorism watchlist, as the Biden administration repeatedly denied Fox News’ Freedom of Information Act requests and appeals for the data. The Biden administration cited “privacy concerns” of the people on the list, as well as “minimal public interest” for denying the requests.

Still, there were over 2 million known gotaways at the border during the Biden administration, and because they were never caught, there is no way of knowing where the individuals were from.

All Iranians are considered “special interest aliens” because of national security concerns. Therefore, they are supposed to receive enhanced vetting from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The news comes as U.S. officials sound the alarm regarding the threat of terror-backed sleeper cells in the country just hours after President Donald Trump ordered the successful strikes on key nuclear facilities within Iran.

U.S. schools—and one prestigious institution in particular—have long offered up-and-coming Chinese officials a place to study governance, a practice that the Trump administration could end with a new effort to keep out what it says are Chinese students with Communist Party ties.

For decades, the party has sent thousands of mid-career and senior bureaucrats to pursue executive training and postgraduate studies on U.S. campuses, with Harvard University a coveted destination described by some in China as the top “party school” outside the country.

Alumni of such programs include a former vice president and Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s top negotiator in trade talks with the first Trump administration.

In an effort announced Wednesday by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. authorities will tighten criteria for visa applications from China and “aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.”

{snip}

Alleged ties with the Communist Party have emerged as a leading line of attack in President Trump’s pressure campaign against Harvard. {snip}

{snip}

Some U.S. politicians have said that China’s Communist Party is harvesting expertise in American academia to ultimately harm U.S. interests. The Trump administration has cited these criticisms among others to back its efforts to force a major cultural shift in U.S. colleges, which many conservatives regard as bastions of liberal and left-wing ideology.

American universities have played leading roles in shaping China’s overseas training programs for mid-career officials, which Beijing started arranging at scale in the 1990s as a way to improve governance by exposing its bureaucrats to Western public-policy ideas and practices.

{snip}

Harvard enjoys a sterling reputation among Chinese officials thanks to its record in training highflying bureaucrats who went on to take senior government roles and, in some cases, join the party’s elite Politburo. Some observers dubbed Harvard a de facto “party school,” as the party’s own training academies for promising bureaucrats are known.

{snip}

While Harvard Kennedy School hosted Chinese students as early as the 1980s, Beijing started sending officials for mid-career training there in a more organized manner in the following decade, according to Chinese media reports. One program, launched in 1998, offered fellowships and executive training courses to around 20 senior officials each year.

In the early 2000s, Harvard launched another program, “China’s Leaders in Development,” through which Chinese officials would undergo a weekslong training course split between Harvard and Beijing’s prestigious Tsinghua University.

The program was designed to “help prepare senior local and central Chinese government officials to more effectively address the ongoing challenges of China’s national reforms,” according to Harvard.

According to newsletters published by the Kennedy School’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, the Harvard segment of the program has featured classes on subjects including public management, economic development and social policy, as well as visits to U.S. government organizations.

Some children of top Communist Party officials have also attended Harvard for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

The Senate parliamentarian has rejected several more provisions in the Republican megabill to enact President Trump’s agenda, including language authorizing states to conduct border security and immigration enforcement, which traditionally have been duties of the federal government.

Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough also ruled against language in the bill that would increase the Federal Employees Retirement Systems contribution rate for new civil servants if they do not agree to give up civil service protections to become at-will employees.

Additionally, the parliamentarian advised against a section of the bill that would allow the executive branch to reorganize federal government agencies — or eliminate whole agencies — without congressional oversight.

The parliamentarian ruled these provisions violate the Byrd Rule and are not eligible to pass the Senate with a simple majority vote on the procedural fast track known as budget reconciliation.

A Tennessee judge on Sunday ordered the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, whose mistaken deportation has become a flashpoint in President Trump’s immigration crackdown, while he awaits a federal trial on human smuggling charges. But he is not expected to be allowed to go free.

At his June 13 detention hearing, prosecutors said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would take Abrego Garcia into custody if he were released on the criminal charges, and he could be deported before he has a chance to stand trial.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes has scheduled a hearing for Wednesday to discuss the conditions of Abrego Garcia’s release. The U.S. government has already filed a motion to appeal the judge’s release order.

Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement Monday that Abrego Garcia “will never go free on American soil.”

Holmes acknowledged in her ruling Sunday that determining whether Abrego Garcia should be released is “little more than an academic exercise” because ICE will likely detain him. But the judge wrote that everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence and “a full and fair determination of whether he must remain in federal custody pending trial.”

Holmes wrote that the government failed to prove that Abrego Garcia was a flight risk, that he posed a danger to the community or that he would interfere with proceedings if released.

“Overall, the Court cannot find from the evidence presented that Abrego Garcia’s release clearly and convincingly poses an irremediable danger to other persons or to the community,” the judge wrote.

Abrego Garcia has pleaded not guilty to the smuggling charges that his attorneys have characterized as an attempt to justify the deportation mistake after the fact.

The acting U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, Rob McGuire, argued on June 13 that the likely attempt by ICE to try to deport him was one reason to keep him in jail.

But Holmes said then that she had no intention of “getting in the middle of any ICE hold.”

“If I elect to release Mr. Abrego, I will impose conditions of release, and the U.S. Marshal will release him.” If he is released into ICE custody, that is “above my pay grade,” she said.

The judge suggested that the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security could work out between themselves whether the government’s priority is to try him on the criminal charges or deport him. {snip}

Will Allensworth, an assistant federal public defender representing Abrego Garcia at the detention hearing, told Holmes that “it’s not necessarily accurate that he would be immediately deported.”

At least 145 women across France were targeted in syringe attacks at the Festival of Music 2025 (Fête de la Musique), which offers free concerts in cities across the country.

Before the festival, there were reportedly calls on social media to jab women with syringes during the festivities. In many such attacks, women are injected with the date rape drug GHB, but attackers also use other substances. However, French authorities have not yet indicated what, if any substances, were involved in these specific attacks.

Many of the women in these recent attacks reported feeling unwell and experiencing other symptoms. In total, 12 suspects were arrested across France.

Although this list is not exhaustive, Remix News has compiled information on some of the cities that were most affected by the attacks.

Chambéry

In the French city of Chambéry, the 2025 edition of the Fête de la Musique, known as the Festival of Music, saw several women attacked with syringes, notably in front of the electro stage at Carré Curial. A suspect was arrested and handed over to the police by security guards, according to Dauphiné Libéré.

“We had up to five people come forward, all young girls, for injections. Some went to the emergency room, others didn’t, in particular to carry out toxicological analyses,” said the national police in Chambéry. “No victim apparently felt any physical effects, loss of consciousness, or tingling, following the injections.”

The first attacks allegedly took place near the Rue du Théâtre before moving into the Carré Curial. A number of girls were injected near the crowd near the “Podium Electro Dance” stage from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

One woman, who had photographed her attacker, confronted him during the event. She told Dauphiné Libéré: “We were filming in the pit and I happened to stumble upon him. I showed him the photo and told him it was him, and he denied it. Then he tried to punch me, which I dodged, before I swung at him,” said Sonia Meghouche. Her friend rushed to restrain the man. “He punched a security guard and kicked another, and he was struggling. He was saying to me in Arabic, ‘Let me go,’ but that was out of the question. He showed me a card and said, ‘I’m a doctor,’ but that wasn’t the point.”

Paris

In Paris, 24 people—including 23 women and a 15-year-old girl—have filed complaints with the police after they were illegally injected with syringes in various neighborhoods of Paris duiring the Music Festival 2025. Among the neighborhoods where the incidents took place were Asnières (Hauts-de-Seine) and Brunoy (Essonne).

A 36-year-old man with autism was arrested in Paris on suspicion of also jabbing a woman, according to Le Parisien.

Montpellier

A young woman said she was the victim of a brutal syringe attack during the Fête de la Musique in Montpellier on Saturday, June 21, in the Comédie district.

A 28-year-old Bangladeshi man was arrested, with police finding an empty syringe in his possession. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

The suspect has a deportation order (OQTF), according to French news outlet Midi Libre.

Metz

According to Le Républicain Lorrain, around 10 young girls, most of whom are minors, were victims of syringe pricks in the city center of Metz during the Fête de la Musique. Large crowds gathered during the festival, numbering approximately 50,000 people.

The girls were treated by emergency technicians and then taken to the hospital for tests. Mayor François Grosdidier, who was present at the scene, confirmed the arrest of one individual.

During the evening, nine women approached first-aid tents and explained that they had felt a sharp pain characteristic of a needle jab. However, no woman suffered from any cognitive issues, indicating that GHB was likely not used.

Grenoble

There were also a number of victims in Grenoble, with some transported to Grenoble Alpes University Hospital to undergo medical tests. Toxicology reports were also ordered.

Reports indicate that around 8:00 p.m., a young woman claimed to have been the victim of an injection attack while she was at Place du Docteur-Léon-Martin. The suspect’s description was circulated on social media.

Several people then reported seeing one or more men who could match the description given by the young woman. However, no suspects were arrested by the police, according to news outlet Dauphiné Libéré.

In total, over 370 suspects were detained across France during the Music Festival 2025, with at least six stabbings reported in Paris. Brawls and widespread violence took place, including battles with the police. Approximately 50 vehicle arsons also occurred.

Over 2.1 million Americans have dropped out of college without earning a degree, a troubling trend that raises concerns about whether universities are prioritizing politics over academic achievement.

A June 4 report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found that college non-completers rose by 2.2 percent in the past year. Citing a lack of direction, student debt, and disillusionment with the value of a degree, many students are leaving school without finishing.

{snip}

Instead of addressing these foundational issues—like affordability, job readiness, and clear academic pathways—many institutions have ramped up investments in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programming.

Campus Reform has extensively covered the explosion of DEI efforts across higher education. Some universities now employ more DEI officers than history professors. These bureaucracies often mandate ideological trainings, revise general education courses to reflect political priorities, and fund identity-based events—all without clear evidence that they improve student success or retention.

Jenna Robinson, president of the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, told Campus Reform that the drop in enrollment reflects universities abandoning their academic mission.

Federal agents used non-lethal munitions to shut down a large group of protesters who tried to block law enforcement vehicles from entering and exiting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday night.

The chaotic scenes unfolded when agents deployed rubber bullets, tear gas and flash bangs to disperse the crowd who had swarmed the compound, according to video captured by Turning Point USA’s Frontlines.

It was the latest in a series of protests outside the ICE building in the sanctuary city which have raged for about a week and a half.

{snip}

As nighttime fell, tensions escalated and protesters rolled a dumpster in front of the ICE entrance, prompting a barrage of non-lethal blast balls being fired by law enforcement on a rooftop, per the video.

Despite multiple warnings to disperse, the protesters refused to leave. Officers in riot gear then advanced, firing munitions while tear gas filled the air, forcing the group to eventually retreat. Homeland Security cited the need to clear the area so several government vehicles could exit safely.

Smoke grenades were launched at riot police, who responded with overwhelming force to break up the protest.

Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News Digital that five people were arrested.

Shiloh Hendrix, a white woman based in Rochester, Minnesota, went viral after admitting in a video that she called a five-year-old Black child the N-word while at a local park on 28 April.

Though Hendrix was met with widespread condemnation and denunciation after the incident, she also raised over $750,000 on the crowdfunding website GiveSendGo, commonly used by extremists to fundraise for far-right causes. Many contributors to Hendrix’s campaign, which was created to “protect [Hendrix’s] family” after backlash, used racial slurs and Nazi symbols in their donation names. As of 1 June, more than 30,000 people had donated to Hendrix’s fundraiser. The support and funding Hendrix received for her racist actions raised alarm bells for many, including the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which flagged the fundraiser as being used to “spread hateful talking points and legitimize their ideas”. Experts say the response to her campaign signals the rise of more overt, public support for racist actions, versus their condemnation.

Hendrix isn’t the first white person to become infamous for racist behavior and receive financial support from members of the public. A legal defense fund for Daniel Penny, a white veteran who killed Jordan Neely, a Black unhoused man, on a New York City subway in 2023, raised over $3.3m on GiveSendGo. The fund was created by Penny’s defense lawyers. A similar campaign was started for Kyle Rittenhouse, who shot and killed two protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, during a 2020 demonstration against the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man. That crowdfunding drive was started by Friends of Kyle Rittenhouse, a group based in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised more than $585,000. Several fundraisers for participants of the 2021 Capitol insurrection are currently hosted on the website.

But experts say that the grassroots nature of Hendrix’s fundraiser is concerning. Compared with the success of fundraisers like Rittenhouse or Penny that were largely driven by media attention and conservative politicians, Hendrix’s campaign is in support of her use of a racial slur and was spread by white supremacist circles.

“This particular case stands out because of the horrifying, vile slur that is being defended,” said Brian Levin, the founding director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino. He added: “It’s illustrative of something that we’ve seen with regard to online organizing with respect to ‘dyed-in-the-wool’ racists, as opposed to just more controversial political expression.”

Organizations and individuals explicitly supporting white supremacy, anti-LGBTQ+, and QAnon conspiracies raised over $6m on fundraising sites, including GiveSendGo, between 2016 and 2022, according to a report from the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism. GiveSendGo hosted the majority of fundraisers, about 86.5% of the money tracked by the ADL.

Other experts say that the Hendrix campaign demonstrates a shift in public opinion following Donald Trump’s latest electoral victory, one where bigoted acts receive more open, tangible support than ever before. “There’s evidence that in the last few years, we’ve really seen a normalization of explicitly racialized politics,” said Jennifer Chudy, an assistant professor of political science at Wellesley College. “I think the person in the White House has emboldened people who may have felt silently sympathetic in the past towards this white woman, to now be more open about it, to not have any kind of sense of embarrassment or shame [since] this is a position that many in our upper echelons of power endorse and profess.”

In many ways, the success of Hendrix’s crowdfunding campaign represents an “anomaly”, said Mark Dwyer, an extremism funding investigator with the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism. For one, a small group of users on X, known for spreading racist rhetoric online, claimed that they created the fundraiser on GiveSendGo and then reached out to Hendrix, offering her support, said Dwyer.

What’s more, Hendrix’s crowdfunding came after a viral fundraising campaign for Karmelo Anthony on the same platform. Anthony, a Black teenager from Frisco, Texas, allegedly stabbed and killed Austin Metcalf, a white teenager from a rival school, during a track meet. White supremacists encouraged people to donate to Hendrix’s fund as a rebuttal to money raised for Anthony’s legal defense fund, which Dwyer said probably boosted the campaign’s success.

Hendrix’s video also served as a form of recruitment and camaraderie for folks who may have bigoted views but are not white supremacists. “[Hendrix’s video] got in front of millions and millions and millions of eyes. It drove donors that might not necessarily be the hardcore white supremacist, but in their eyes, they don’t see what she did as a problem,” said Dwyer. He added: “People are voting on their views with their dollar. [For] a lot of people, this might be their first action outside of posting on social media to push their views and making a donation.”

This latest incident represents a sharp contrast in how the public reacted to racist incidents just a few years ago. With the launch of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2013, many white people began facing public outrage over problematic behavior, including their harassment of Black people in public spaces. Jennifer Schulte, nicknamed “Barbecue Becky”, was widely criticized in 2018 after calling 911 on a Black family who was barbecuing in an Oakland, California, park. Amy Cooper was fired from her job after a trending video proved that she falsely claimed that a Black birdwatcher threatened her and her dog. “Karen” quickly became a moniker to describe an entitled, nosy white woman as racial justice protests spread across the globe in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd.

But Chudy said that high levels of support for the Black Lives Matter movement among white people was also due to a confluence of unusual forces, including the Covid-19 pandemic and viral video of Floyd’s murder. She added: “You had white people who were stuck at home, [with the] typical distractions of their daily life suspended and so they would watch their screens and they saw an unambiguous, violent, lethal interaction between a white police officer and a Black man. We were always going to kind of revert to the norm.”

Backlash to support for racial justice also came quickly, best illustrated by the political rise and election of Trump in 2016. “Trump emerges on the national stage with an explicitly racial agenda of talking about Obama’s birth certificate and where he’s from,” said Chudy. “Because Trump is so visible, because he’s served in the highest political office in the land twice, that’s just a lot of visibility to entrench new norms.”

Meanwhile, individuals who were previously sympathetic to racial justice causes largely reduced their support. “White people might feel like, ‘Oh, we already discussed those issues. We already read the books, did the marches. So why is there still something to be upset about?’” said Chudy.

In the midst of shifting support, platforms like GiveSendGo have been used as a fundraising tool by “alt-right” extremists to fund causes. The website advertises itself as a free, philanthropic platform that emphasizes “providing hope for people’s spiritual needs”, according to the group’s website. “The most valuable currency is God’s love”, the website reads, noting that GiveSendGo also partners with “individuals and organizations dedicated to praying over our campaigns”.

In a statement to the Guardian, a GiveSendGo representative defended the platform’s choice to house Hendrix’s fundraiser. “Even in situations where we do not personally agree with an individual’s past actions or beliefs, we still believe in the importance of personal choice,” said Alex Shipley, the site’s communications director. “Those who agree with the campaign’s purpose are free to give, and those who disagree are free not to participate. GiveSendGo is not a place of judgment but a place of generosity, where people can choose how they wish to respond.” Shipley added that the website has a “terms of service” where content would be subject to moderation or removal.

But GiveSendGo has continually maintained a “laissez-faire” attitude towards racist and bigoted campaigns on their platform, said Dwyer. “They aren’t going to de-platform people, no matter how reprehensible it is, until it reaches a bar of their choosing,” he said.

As other regressions in racial progress happen – rollbacks on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and racist language in politics – open support for folks like Hendrix might become commonplace. “Based on social media chatter, this was an empowering moment [for white supremacists],” Dwyer said of the Hendrix fundraiser. “It increases the likelihood of something like this happening again.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul took a moment Tuesday to flaunt state spending on immigrant legal services that was already announced and secured in this year’s budget after City Comptroller and mayoral hopeful Brad Lander was detained by ICE.

“(Immigrants) don’t have the attention, they don’t have the lawyers, and that’s why the state of New York is providing $50 million to cover legal services for people who are finding themselves in this situation,” Hochul trumpeted outside a Manhattan courthouse after coming to Lander’s aid.

In making the comments, however, Hochul lowballed the figure as the state budget currently includes $64.2 million, not $50 million, for immigration legal aid.

And though the governor seemed to seek praise for the legal funding enacted into the new budget, Lander and his lefty allies have been pushing state officials for a much higher dollar amount.

Belgian conservative-nationalist Dries Van Langenhove has again been sentenced on appeal to one year in prison as a suspended sentence for what the judge said were violations of the Racism and Negationism Act.

The sentence stems from racist memes that were not even posted by him, but by members of a group chat he administrated seven years ago.

The sentence was delivered today by the Court of Appeal in Ghent, although Van Langenhove does not accept the sentence, and the case now goes into cassation.

On X, Van Langenhove simply wrote, “Guilty. 12 months in jail. Madness.”

He later clarified upon receipt of the written verdict that the custodial sentence “appears to be a suspended sentence,” which he suspects is “most likely because the prisons in Belgium are literally full of illegal migrants.”

“Most people don’t realize that the end result of such a sentence is the same. One politically incorrect tweet can now put me in jail. One meme sent by someone else in a group chat I am in can turn the suspended sentence into an effective one. This suspended sentence is the gravest form of censorship they could pursue and an effective way to kill activism,” he added.

Last year, Van Langenhove was sentenced to a one-year prison sentence and a fine of €16,000. He would also be sentenced to be deprived of his right to stand for election for a maximum term of 10 years, but he appealed this verdict in a lower court.

Van Langenhove ran a chat in 2018, but a broadcast from Pano news outlet showed how members exchanged thousands of potentially racist and sexist messages. This included several hundred memes or internet cartoons.

Van Langenhove contended they were jokes and indicated he did not post anything himself. Seven members of the group chat faced criminal prosecution.

Notably, the case in a country like the United States would have never gone to trial due to freedom of expression enshrined in the constitution. However, Belgium and a range of EU countries have not only beefed up hate speech laws but are also using them to prosecute political dissidents and anti-immigration activists, with Van Langenhove now one of the most high-profile targets.

After several delays, the Court of Appeal in Ghent delivered its sentence today.

Van Langenhove was convicted of violations of the Racism and Negationism Act, but the court argued that since the facts date from seven years ago, they merit a lighter sentence. The one-year prison sentence is fully postponed, and the fine is still €16,000. Van Langenhove will also not be deprived of his civil rights.

“It is a black day for free speech, for Flanders, and for Europe,” said Van Langenhove when he came out. “Me, my family, and my environment have been terrorized for humor in a private chat group for seven years. Unfortunately, the court never wanted to listen to me, even now.”

The court, however, found that Van Langenhove cannot use humor as a defense “if the real intention is to incite hatred.”

“In the private Facebook and Discord group, by the way, not only jokes and cartoons were sent, but also many other, ordinary messages that show that Shield & Friends (the chat group’s name) apparently and repeatedly proclaimed discrimination and racism.”

The court argued that even though Van Langenhove did not send the messages, he was responsible.

“He didn’t have it removed, even though he had the option to do so,” said the Court.

It rejected that VRT journalists manipulated the content of the messages, which Van Langenhove claimed.

The Court of Cassation will now review the legality of the judicial decisions, but will not examine the facts themselves. In most cases, the court determines whether the trial should be repeated.

“If necessary, I will then go to the European Court,” said Van Langenhove. “I certainly don’t give up the fight.”

Van Langenhove was on trial with five other defendants, who will receive 80 hours of work and fines of €1,600. However, two others will be sentenced to three years in prison with deferment.

One defendant who expressed regret was convicted, but his term will be suspended under separate conditions.

The case has been broadly watched as a litmus test on free speech conditions in Europe, with the European model focusing less on freedom of speech and more on controlled speech, especially on issues related to race, sex, and immigration.

Furthermore, questions have been raised about how access was obtained to the chat group in the first place, with allegations that a hack attack was conducted.

Donald Trump has promised an expanded immigration crackdown in several large Democratic-led cities as apparent vengeance for “No Kings” protests against his administration on Saturday that drew millions of people – despite questions over whether the agency in charge of the effort is set to run out of money.

In new reporting on Monday, Axios claimed US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) was $1bn over budget and set to run out of money in the next one to three months.

The outlet noted that Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” directed tens of billions of dollars to Ice over the next five years and suggested Trump would direct other government funds to the agency if the bill failed to pass Congress.

Trump raised the specter of an expanded immigration crackdown in a lengthy Sunday night post to his Truth Social network, alleging without evidence that the cities had become the “core of the Democratic power center” by using “illegal aliens to expand their voter base”.

Non-citizens are not permitted to vote in US elections – and there is no widespread evidence of them ever having done so.

“ICE Officers are herewith ordered, by notice of this TRUTH, to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History,” he wrote.

“We must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America’s largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside.”

The California city has become a flashpoint for protests against Ice raids, with Trump sending in national guard troops and US marines in an unprecedented show of force. {snip}

Trump’s stance on immigration has fluctuated wildly in recent days. {snip}

{snip}

Sunday’s post, however, appeared to reverse his position again. His choice to identify only Democratic-run cities with large immigrant populations, and omit others controlled by, or leaning Republican, was notable.

His use of the far-right buzzword “remigration” to describe his administration’s deportation agenda is also seen as deliberate.

“Our Federal Government will continue to be focused on the REMIGRATION of Aliens to the places from where they came, and preventing the admission of ANYONE who undermines the domestic tranquility of the United States,” he wrote.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s office requested “a passive approach to Juneteenth messaging” for the holiday on Thursday commemorating the end of slavery, according to an email obtained by Rolling Stone. The news was relayed by the Pentagon’s Office of the Chief of Public Affairs, which said it wasn’t planning to publish Juneteenth-related content online, per the email.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865, after the Civil War ended, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and announced that the enslaved Americans in the state had been freed. June 19 was made into a federal holiday under a law signed by former President Joe Biden in 2021. The bill passed the Senate unanimously and with broad bipartisan support in the U.S. House.

Asked for comment, a Pentagon official says the Department of Defense “may engage in the following activities, subject to applicable department guidance: holiday celebrations that build camaraderie and esprit de corps; outreach events (e.g., recruiting engagements with all-male, all-female, or minority-serving academic institutions) where doing so directly supports DoD’s mission; and recognition of historical events and notable figures where such recognition informs strategic thinking, reinforces our unity, and promotes meritocracy and accountability.”

{snip}

Since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, the administration has led a crusade against the concept of diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI. Hegseth has dutifully carried out Trump’s anti-diversity purge, declaring in a handwritten directive, posted to X, that “DEI is DEAD” at the Department of Defense. “Those who do not comply will no longer work here,” he added.

In a Senate hearing Wednesday, the former Fox News host said in his prepared testimony, “DEI is dead. We replaced it with a colorblind, gender-neutral, merit-based approach, and the force is responding incredibly.” {snip}

Hegseth banned the Defense Department from using official resources to celebrate heritage months — like Black History Month, the day before it began. {snip}

Two drag queens sashayed onto the floor of the Oregon House of Representatives and delivered an awkward, over-the-top performance for lawmakers Wednesday morning — with one Republican official decrying the charade as pure “political theater.”

The bizarre fiasco erupted on the chamber floor in honor of a Democratic resolution recognizing “the artistry of black drag performers” in the Beaver State, Rep. Travis E. Nelson told The Post.

The Democrat is the first black LGBTQIA+ House member.

Video of the flamboyant display captured the two queens — one sporting a bright yellow shimmery jumpsuit, with the other rocking a rainbow-hued one-piece with a blue wig — lip-synching to Aretha Franklin’s “A Deeper Love” while dancing wildly and jumping up and down around the chamber for nearly five minutes.

“I’m not sure the Founding Fathers envisioned taxpayer-funded legislative chambers being turned into platforms for political theater,” Rep. Dwayne Yunker posted on X, with footage of the cringeworthy act.

“The House floor is meant for serious debate, lawmaking, and serving all Oregonians not partisan spectacles designed to push cultural agendas. If this feels more like a performance than governance, you’re not alone.”

Social media also went ablaze, with the scene drawing mixed reactions.

When you’re used to being under a cordon sanitaire in Brussels, every little victory counts.

On Thursday, June 19th, the Patriots for Europe (PfE) group managed to break the anti-conservative alliance of the “center-right” EPP and the left-wing parties by convincing the former to back two of their amendments to a Parliamentary resolution on the current situation in Mali, where the local junta recently dissolved all political parties to solidify its oppressive rule.

The amendments in question—both heavily opposed by all left-wing parties—called on the EU Commission to address the urgent dangers of a new wave of mass migration from the Sahel region due to the growing instability, by holding the military administration accountable for controlling departures, and by cooperating on returns with both Mali and the nearby transit countries.

The second amendment aimed to honor the memory of European soldiers—58 French, five Dutch, two German, one Spanish, and one Portuguese—who died fighting jihadist forces in the African country at the request of local authorities.

“It’s about justice and recognition. Their sacrifice must transcend political divisions,” MEP Matthieu Valet from the French National Rally (RN), who submitted the amendments, told europeanconservative.com.

The first amendment is even more important, as it addresses an urgent and politically sensitive issue, “the rise in illegal immigration from Mali to Europe, driven by insecurity, political instability, and economic stagnation,” Valet explained.

“The adoption of this text sends a clear message: Europe’s migration policy must be firm, responsible, and sovereign,” the MEP said. “Moreover, we succeeded in breaking the cordon sanitaire that has too often prevented certain truths from being voiced within European institutions.”

Despite the Left’s opposition to these amendments, the full text of the resolution was adopted by near-unanimous support from all political parties in the Parliament.

The document calls on General Assimi Goïta—the interim president of Mali since the 2021 coup d’etat—to immediately reinstate the political parties and restore the country’s democratic framework, as well as to refrain from any actions against the political opposition that would further fuel the flames and instability in Mali and throughout the Sahel region.

A member of the ruling Christian Democrats (CDU) is now criticizing the practice of “church asylum,” which he says is a violation of European law.

Alexander Throm, the domestic policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, said that in these cases, the migrants in question are not even being deported back to their home countries, but are instead headed to the EU countries where these migrants were first registered.

“What’s remarkable is that almost all of these church asylum cases—there were around 2,300 or 2,400 such cases across Germany last year—are so-called Dublin cases,” Throm told RTL/ntv’s Frühstart program on Wednesday. He said they are not being sent home, but “returned to the EU country actually responsible for their asylum procedure, i.e., a safe country where a proper asylum procedure is guaranteed.”

Church asylum is the controversial practice where churches shelter migrants from deportation on church grounds; however, nearly all of the migrants who arrived in Germany passed through many safe countries on their way. As a result, Germany has the right to deport many of them back, including to countries like Poland, Italy, and Greece, under the Dublin rules.

“I believe the churches are taking the wrong side here,” Throm said. He said they were undermining EU law “by keeping people in church asylum so long that the time limits have expired, then they are also undermining European law.”

Now, he is calling for the state’s handling of church asylum cases to be rethought, “especially in Dublin cases.”

There is no actual law preventing the state from removing the migrants who are under deportation violations, but there is a “tacit agreement,” according to Welt, that protects these migrants.

The Church has increasingly resorted to using church asylum to shield migrants. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) reported that in 2024, there were 2,386 cases, a jump of 300 compared to 2023.

Juneteenth, the holiday that marks the end of slavery in the United States, has been celebrated at the White House each June 19 since it was enshrined into law four years ago. But on Thursday, it went unmarked by the president — except for a post on social media in which he said he would get rid of some “non-working holidays.”

“Soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year,” Mr. Trump said in mangled syntax, not mentioning Juneteenth by name nor acknowledging that Thursday was a federal holiday. “It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, indicated to reporters earlier in the day that she was not aware of any plans by Mr. Trump to sign a holiday proclamation. In the past week alone, he’d issued proclamations commemorating Father’s Day, Flag Day and National Flag Week, and the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill — none of which are among the 11 annual federal holidays.

In response to a reporter’s question about Juneteenth, Ms. Leavitt acknowledged that Thursday was “a federal holiday,” but noted that White House staff had shown up to work during a briefing that focused primarily on the matter of whether Mr. Trump would order strikes on Iran.

{snip}

Even so, the decision not to mark the holiday was an abrupt reversal from his last term, when Mr. Trump issued statements on Juneteenth for three years, before it was ever a federal holiday.

THE LA Dodgers have come under fire from Immigration and Customs Enforcement after the team claimed they denied agents access to their grounds on Thursday.

ICE hit back, saying the claim was “false” and they “were never there.”

Homeland Security also insisted that the agents seen at the Dodger Stadium on Thursday had “nothing to do with the Dodgers” and said they were from Customs and Border Patrol.

“CBP vehicles were in the stadium parking lot very briefly, unrelated to any operation or enforcement,” the agency added in a post.

Department of Homeland Security vehicles were seen parked outside the stadium gates in Elysian Park on Thursday morning.

The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed they denied the agents’ access to the stadium when they arrived at the venue’s parking lots.

“This morning, ICE agents came to Dodger Stadium and requested permission to access the parking lots,” the Dodgers said in a statement on social media.

“They were denied entry to the grounds by the organization.”

{snip}

Dozens of federal agents were seen wearing face masks and tactical gear as they staged outside the Gate E entrance.

Protesters with signs swarmed the area near the stadium and chanted, “ICE out of LA!” after social media posts circulated calling demonstrators to rally against the staging.

{snip}

ICE raids have swept southern California in recent weeks, sparking thousands to rally in anti-ICE and anti-Trump protests in Los Angeles.

The Dodgers have been under pressure to break their weeks-long silence about the unrest in their city.

Los Angeles residents have called for the MLB team to show their support for their immigrant fans during Donald Trump’s crackdown.

The team was expected to announce their plans to aid immigrant communities in Los Angeles on Thursday before the agents showed up, a team spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times.

{snip}

Local officials alerted the Los Angeles Police Department of the agents outside the stadium on Thursday morning, according to ABC affiliate KABC.

LAPD notified the Dodgers organization, which reportedly told the ICE agents to leave the property.

A Spanish teacher in Spokane is expected to be terminated after reading a passage from “To Kill A Mockingbird” to his class that included the n-word.

The teacher, Matthew Mastronardi, overheard students in his class at West Valley High School discussing the Harper Lee novel and how another teacher told them to skip over the controversial slur within the text. Mastronardi disagreed with that decision.

“I expressed my disagreement with having to skip over words, especially words that prevent a conversation there,” Mastronardi said on “The John Curley Show.” {snip}

According to Mastronardi, a student asked him, “If you were reading the book, would you read the word?” He responded with, “If I were reading from the book, I would read every single word.” This conversation captured the attention of a few other classmates, including one of my favorite students who whipped out the book, turned to the page, and said, “OK, then do it.”

{snip}

On April 28, Mastronardi was given a verbal warning, claiming the incident violated the district’s Civility and Professional Staff Student Boundaries policy. Approximately a week later, Mastronardi was called for a meeting with Human Resources and Principal Mulvey. During this meeting, he was informed he had two options: to voluntarily resign or to expect his contract not to be renewed once it expires.
